Feds: No official cause of multi-state salmonella outbreak
Apr 6th 2012, 12:07

Federal officials say they are trying to find the cause of a salmonella outbreak that has sickened dozens of people across the country, including at least five in the Carolinas.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says two people from North Carolina and three from South Carolina are among those who have gotten sick.

The CDC says officials haven't determined the cause of the outbreak, but say nearly 70 percent of the people they've interviewed so far reported eating some kind of sushi within in a week of getting sick.

At least 93 people in 18 states and the District of Columbia have been sickened so far. No deaths have been reported, but the CDC says at least 10 people need to be hospitalized.

A total of 93 persons infected with the outbreak strain of salmonella bareilly have been reported from 19 states and the District of Columbia.

Earlier this week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it thought sushi was the suspected cause of the salmonella; but according to the CDC's website, the investigation has not conclusively identified a food source.
